The decade began with a notable entry in 2014: Ich Seh, Ich Seh (known as Goodnight Mommy), directed by Veronika Franz and Severin FialaSusanne Wuest, recuperates from surgery. Her twin sons, Elias and Lukas, become convinced that she is an imposter. This psychological thriller, rich in gothic cinematography, delves into themes of motherhood and trauma, establishing a narrative style that would resonate throughout the decade.

In 2015, Évolution, directed by Lucile Hadžihalilović, captivated audiences with its unsettling examination of adolescent sexuality. Fast forward to 2016, a year that saw an explosion of innovative horror films. Raw, directed by Julia Ducournau, stands out as a visceral exploration of primal urges and sisterhood. The film follows Justine, a vegetarian veterinary student, whose transformation into a cannibal serves as a metaphor for self-discovery and societal nonconformity. Ducournau’s bold storytelling earned her the prestigious Palme d’Or for her later work, Titane.
From Psychological Thrills to Supernatural Chills
The following year, Aterrados (or Terrified) by Demián RugnaSuspiria, directed by Luca Guadagnino, reimagined the 1977 classic into a dark tale of obsession and control, set against the backdrop of political turmoil in 1970s Berlin. Its emotional depth resonates powerfully, making it a standout entry in the genre.
The momentum continued into 2021 with Censor, directed by Prano Bailey-Bond. Set in the aftermath of the UK’s “video nasty” scandal, the film follows a film censor who becomes embroiled in a psychological unraveling as she confronts her past. The film captures the tension between reality and fiction, exploring how societal pressures can distort perception.
In 2022, Gæsterne (or Speak No Evil) by Christian Tafdrup presented a disturbing narrative about the dangers of politeness and societal norms. As a family’s vacation takes a dark turn, the film examines the complexities of human communication and the often-unacknowledged evils that can lurk beneath the surface.
The latest horror offering, Cuando acecha la maldad (or When Evil Lurks), directed by Demián Rugna, debuted in 2023.
