Donegal Competitors Shine at National Ploughing Association Awards
The National Ploughing Association (NPA) Awards held on October 5, 2025, in Tullamore showcased a remarkable lineup of winners from Donegal. The event celebrated the skills and dedication of participants across various ploughing categories, with several local competitors earning accolades for their exceptional performances.
Among the notable winners, Dean Conaghan received a Silver Medal in the Under 21 Conventional Senior category. He was presented the award by NPA chairman John Deery, along with Cllr Sean O’Brien, Leas Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council, and NPA president Mick Mahon. Conaghan’s achievement highlights the growing talent in Donegal’s youth.
In another impressive feat, Peter Buchanan also from Donegal, secured a Silver Medal for the 3 Furrow Conventional Junior competition. His success reflects the high standards of ploughing skills in the region, further enhancing Donegal’s reputation in agricultural competitions.
Celebrating Diverse Achievements
The awards night continued to bring recognition to Donegal’s competitors. Harry Mallon earned a Bronze Medal in the Intermediate Conventional category, showcasing his commitment and expertise in ploughing. Similarly, Cara Simms received a Silver Medal for the Loy Ladies Junior event, adding to the impressive roster of Donegal’s female competitors.
Another standout was Marion Boyce, who claimed the North Connaught Farmers Cup alongside a Gold Medal in the Loy Ladies Senior category. Boyce’s achievements demonstrate the significant contributions of women in the agricultural sector, inspiring many young aspiring ploughers.
Further accolades were awarded to Michael Boyle, who took home a Shield and Gold Medal for the Loy U-21 category, and Gerry Mallon, recognized with a Bronze Medal for the Loy Men Senior competition. Their successes underline the depth of talent present in Donegal’s agricultural community.
Top Honors for Donegal’s Elite
The evening culminated with Oliver Peoples receiving the Pat The Baker Cup and a Gold Medal for the Loy Men Senior category. His victory exemplifies the dedication and expertise required to excel in competitive ploughing, marking a significant achievement for both him and Donegal.
The awards ceremony not only celebrated individual success but also highlighted the importance of community and tradition in the agricultural sector. The NPA’s recognition of Donegal’s ploughers reaffirms the county’s place in the heart of Ireland’s farming heritage.
