Bluesky Surges to 40 Million Users, New Features Announced

UPDATE: Social media platform Bluesky has achieved a significant milestone, now boasting 40 million users worldwide, having doubled its user base in just one year. This explosive growth signals the platform’s increasing popularity and comes with the announcement of several innovative features set to enhance user experience.
In a move to further engage its audience, Bluesky has revealed plans to introduce a “dislike” button, aimed at gathering feedback to refine personal feeds. This feature will empower users to express dissatisfaction with posts, allowing the platform to tailor content more effectively. Additionally, Bluesky will roll out a feature that ranks posts based on social proximity, showcasing content from like-minded users, making interactions feel more relevant and community-driven.
Another game-changing addition is the “bullshit detector,” designed to filter out toxic, spammy, and off-topic messages, ultimately promoting healthier conversations. These enhancements reflect Bluesky’s commitment to civil discourse, contrasting sharply with platforms like X (formerly Twitter), which currently has over 500 million active users and is known for its less moderated environment.
Despite the impressive growth, the number of daily active contributors on Bluesky has halved over the past year, stabilizing at around 600,000. This stabilization raises questions about user engagement and retention on the platform, as it continues to compete in a crowded social media landscape.
Bluesky’s creators are optimistic about reaching 50 million users by February 1, 2027, as they continue to innovate and adapt. The developments within Bluesky are crucial not just for its users but for the broader social media ecosystem, where the battle for user attention intensifies daily.
Stay tuned for more updates on how Bluesky evolves and competes against larger platforms. The social media landscape is undergoing rapid changes, and Bluesky’s latest moves are a clear indicator of a shifting dynamic that could reshape user interaction in the digital age.
