Catherine Connolly Slams Fake Video Amid Presidential Race Urgency
UPDATE: Independent TD Catherine Connolly has vehemently condemned a fake AI video falsely claiming she has dropped out of the Presidential race. The misleading clip, purporting to be from RTÉ, suggests that Connolly’s exit would lead to the cancellation of the election, with Heather Humphreys automatically declared the winner.
Connolly, who remains a strong contender in this high-stakes election, confirmed she is still in the race and called the video a “disgraceful attempt to mislead voters and undermine our democracy.” The election is set for Friday, October 24, with polling occurring from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
In a statement, Connolly declared, “The video is a fabrication. I will not be distracted. I will continue my campaign in every county, meeting people and making the case for a hopeful, inclusive presidency.” She urged the public to report the video instead of sharing it, stating, “The surest reply to lies is to vote.”
Following the emergence of the video, Connolly’s team has filed a formal complaint with the Electoral Commission and has requested immediate removal of the clip from social media platforms, demanding clear labeling as fake.
This controversy unfolds as Connolly prepares for a head-to-head showdown against Humphreys, especially after the withdrawal of former Dublin GAA manager Jim Gavin, who remains on the ballot despite his exit from the race. Both candidates will participate in the final Presidential debate scheduled for Tuesday night, a crucial event that could shape voter sentiment.
The landscape of the election is rapidly evolving, with a final pre-election poll expected to be released on Wednesday night. As voters gear up for the election, the integrity of the electoral process is under scrutiny, making Connolly’s call for accountability even more relevant.
As the situation develops, it is clear that this fake video has not only sparked outrage but has also intensified the urgency surrounding the upcoming election. Voter awareness is paramount, with Connolly emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making in the face of misinformation.
