UPDATE: A driver has been convicted of careless driving after his car dramatically “took flight” in a shocking accident on a rural Kilkenny road. This incident, which occurred at approximately 4:30 PM on July 2, 2024, involved Dylan Morrissey, a 25-year-old primary school teacher, who lost control of his Volkswagen Golf while traveling with his brother in Listerlin.

According to Garda Aidan Walsh, who attended the scene, both vehicles involved were facing the same direction towards New Ross. The other vehicle, a black Peugeot driven by a woman from Mullinavat, suffered significant damage to its front, while Mr. Morrissey’s Golf was heavily damaged, with evidence indicating it rolled over.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that the woman in the Peugeot witnessed the Golf losing control and launching into the air after striking a hidden rock. Mr. Morrissey explained to authorities that the rock, which was “camouflaged” in the undergrowth, caused his vehicle to overturn when he swerved to avoid oncoming traffic.

Miraculously, no injuries were reported from the incident, and a claim for material damages has already been settled. Mr. Morrissey’s legal representation emphasized the unfortunate nature of the accident, appealing to the court to avoid imposing a driving disqualification, as he relies on his vehicle for commuting between Kilkenny and Wexford for work.

Judge Geraldine Carthy described the incident as “very unfortunate” before convicting Mr. Morrissey of careless driving. He was fined €700, with a recognizance set in case of an appeal.

This accident highlights the potential dangers of rural driving, particularly when hidden obstacles can lead to catastrophic outcomes. Authorities continue to remind drivers to remain vigilant and aware of road conditions, especially in less populated areas.

As this story develops, the focus remains on ensuring road safety and preventing similar accidents in the future. Stay tuned for more updates on this case and ongoing road safety initiatives.
