Dublin Faces Severe Travel Disruptions Amid Ongoing Protests
URGENT UPDATE: Severe travel disruptions are currently affecting Dublin as protests escalate in the capital. Ongoing unrest follows a violent night at the Citywest Hotel, where more than 500 protestors clashed with police, leading to significant public transport delays.
The protests erupted after the arrest of a 26-year-old man charged with the sexual assault of a young girl at the hotel on October 22, 2025. Authorities confirmed that disturbances began late Tuesday night, with reports of a Garda van being set ablaze and objects being hurled at officers attempting to maintain order.
Public transport services have been severely impacted. The LUAS announced at 3:30 PM that there are no Red Line services operating between Belgard and Saggart due to the protests. A follow-up statement at 6:30 PM confirmed the ongoing disruption, urging commuters to avoid the area.
Gardaí are continuing to manage the situation, with Route W6 diverted since 4 PM and Route 69 from Dublin Bus also affected by the protest activity. An Garda Síochána has closed Garter Lane in Saggart, and diversions are in place as they work to restore order.
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly condemned the aggressive behavior of protesters, stating, “Public order units, the dog unit, the mounted unit, air support, and the water cannon were deployed along with front-line colleagues, which brought the situation to a conclusion.” He emphasized the commitment to identifying and prosecuting those involved in the violence.
Kelly confirmed that six individuals were arrested during the protests, five of whom have already appeared in court. He expressed determination to bring all responsible parties to justice, stating, “We will not begin the process of identifying those who committed crimes, and we will bring those involved in this violence to justice.”
As the situation develops, commuters are advised to check for updates from transport authorities and to seek alternative routes. Officials are working diligently to ensure the safety of both the public and the officers involved in managing the protests.
