Ed Sheeran Shocks Fans with Surprise Wexford Pub Gig

BREAKING: Ed Sheeran electrified fans yesterday with a surprise performance at The Sky and The Ground pub in Wexford, Ireland, during the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. The 34-year-old singer-songwriter stunned attendees with an unannounced set, showcasing his connection to Irish culture and music.
Sheeran was joined by members of local bands, including Biird and Amble, who performed a mix of traditional tunes. This unexpected appearance highlights Sheeran’s deep ties to Wexford, where his late grandmother, Nancy Mulligan, hailed from Gorey. The artist has fond memories of visiting family in the region throughout his childhood.
In an exclusive interview with Dave Moore on Today FM, Sheeran expressed his surprise at never having attended a Fleadh Cheoil before, stating, “Not even as a child, it’s my first time.” He emphasized his strong connection to Irish culture, explaining, “If you’ve got family that’s Irish and you’re brought up with that as your culture, who is someone else to tell you what you grew up with?”
Sheeran also discussed the impact of his hit song, “Galway Girl,” which he referred to as a “gateway drug” for many young fans to explore traditional Irish music. He acknowledged the mixed opinions surrounding the song in traditional music circles, saying, “It’s a double-edged sword. Sometimes I think you need stuff like that and people are always going to have opinions.”
The pop sensation further elaborated on the universal nature of traditional music, stating, “There is this kind of through line between all the traditional music of everyone’s childhood in the world.” He noted the similarities in rhythms and scales across various cultures, reinforcing the interconnectedness of musical traditions.
Despite the thrill of jamming with local musicians, Sheeran confirmed he will not be abandoning his signature acoustic sets. “I think I’ll always be loop pedal,” he declared. “In this music industry, you kind of have to find your thing that you can do better than anyone and then just stick to that.”
As news of Sheeran’s surprise performance continues to spread, fans are eager to see if he will make more unexpected appearances during the festival. The musician’s deep connections to Irish culture and his ability to engage with local traditions make this a significant moment for both him and his fans.
