Galway Senator Demands Permanent Exam Aid for Dyslexic Students
UPDATE: Galway Senator Shane Curley has urgently called for the State Examinations Commission (SEC) to permanently implement exam accommodations for students with dyslexia and dyscalculia. His demands come amid growing concerns that these students are facing unfair disadvantages during examinations.
In a statement released earlier today, Curley criticized the SEC for failing to provide adequate support, emphasizing the need for extended time in exams. He cited recommendations made back in 2009, where experts advised that longer exam durations would enable dyslexic and dyscalculic students to showcase their true abilities without being penalized.
The SEC recently announced a pilot programme aimed at testing potential changes to support these students. However, Curley insists that temporary measures are insufficient. “We cannot afford to wait any longer. Students with learning difficulties deserve a fair chance to succeed,” he stated, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
This call to action resonates with parents and educators who argue that current exam conditions disproportionately affect students with learning differences. Many worry that without these accommodations, students may not reach their full potential, leading to long-term educational and career disadvantages.
Curley’s advocacy highlights a critical issue in the educational system, as dyslexia and dyscalculia affect a significant number of students across Ireland. The need for comprehensive support is becoming increasingly apparent as discussions around equitable education gain momentum.
As this situation develops, all eyes will be on the SEC to see if they will heed Curley’s call for permanent changes. The outcome of the ongoing pilot programme may determine the future of exam accommodations for dyslexic students.
Stay tuned for updates on this pressing issue that impacts the educational landscape in Galway and beyond.
