Limerick Council Urged to Implement Social Inclusion Policies NOW
URGENT UPDATE: Limerick City and County Council is facing immediate pressure to enforce its mixed tenure policy to promote social inclusion in residential planning. Independent Councillor Maria Donoghue has called for decisive action to integrate various housing types—social, affordable, and private—within the city center.
Officials within the Council responded, confirming that they assess residential projects according to the Limerick Development Plan and Housing Strategy. This approach aims to avoid the concentration of social housing and instead foster balanced, sustainable communities.
Cllr Donoghue, who previously led Design and Delivery at the Council, emphasized the need for stronger planning conditions. “Implementing these policies effectively can transform our neighborhoods and offer a greater sense of belonging for all residents,” she stated.
As part of pre-planning consultations, the Council encourages developers to include a mix of tenure in new residential projects, aiming for high-quality schemes that attract diverse residents. Currently, for developments exceeding 40 units seeking State funding for social or affordable housing, the Council mandates a minimum of 20% private tenure, 50% private affordable tenure, and a maximum of 30% social rental tenure.
This structured approach has garnered support from elected members, as officials highlight its success in nurturing integrated communities. The Council also noted that through its Housing For All initiative, various government-supported schemes are in place to promote diverse housing options.
WHAT’S NEXT: The Council plans to review its strategies further and engage with stakeholders to ensure the effective rollout of these policies. With the pressing need for social inclusion and sustainable development in Limerick, all eyes are on the Council’s next moves.
This developing situation is critical for residents and stakeholders alike, as the outcomes will directly affect community dynamics and the future of housing in the region. Stay tuned for further updates as this story unfolds.
