Major Cattle Sale and Seminar Draws Enthusiasts to Kilkenny
The Irish Pure Friesian Seminar and Showcase Sale took place at Kilkenny Mart in Cillin Hill, attracting numerous cattle enthusiasts and breeders on an October afternoon. This year marks a shift for the Irish Pure Friesian Club, which traditionally hosted an on-farm open day, moving to a combined seminar and awards event following the success of last year’s gathering at the Carrickshock Herd, organized by Pat and Claire Cleary and their family.
The event featured not only the showcase sale but also a series of panel discussions aimed at both pedigree breeders and commercial dairy farms interested in British Friesian cows. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with various trade stands while discussing pertinent topics in the dairy industry.
A highlight of the day was the announcement of the winners of the Axa Insurance Irish Pure Friesian Club’s National Herds Competition. This year’s judging was conducted by Roberta Dunbar of the Barncluth Herd in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The awards ceremony recognized outstanding contributions and achievements within the community, celebrating the dedication of breeders to the Irish Pure Friesian breed.
Participants expressed enthusiasm for the event, which not only showcased livestock but also fostered connections among those in the dairy farming community. The blend of education, recognition, and commerce underscored the event’s importance for the future of pedigree breeding.
As the afternoon progressed, attendees were invited to browse a diverse array of cattle on display, each representing the high standards and quality associated with the Irish Pure Friesian breed. The event also provided an excellent platform for knowledge exchange, with discussions focusing on modern practices and innovations in dairy farming.
The shift to this format demonstrates the club’s commitment to evolving with the needs of its members and the broader industry. As the Irish Pure Friesian Club continues to grow, events like the Seminar and Showcase Sale are essential for nurturing relationships and promoting best practices among breeders.
For those who missed the event, a photo gallery capturing key moments is available, showcasing the vibrant atmosphere and the remarkable livestock presented during the day. All images were captured by Brownes Photography, highlighting the significant turnout and engagement from the community.
The success of this year’s seminar and sale sets a promising precedent for future events, ensuring the Irish Pure Friesian breed remains at the forefront of dairy farming in Ireland and beyond.
