Man, 38, Remanded in Custody Over Alleged Mosque Attack Plot
A 38-year-old man has been remanded in custody in Northern Ireland following charges related to a planned attack on a mosque. Connor Pollock, from Croob Park in Ballynahinch, appeared before Downpatrick Magistrates’ Court on charges of terrorism. His hearing, which took place on December 11, 2023, did not include a bail application.
The charges against Pollock stem from a cross-border investigation into an alleged plot by a group calling itself the Irish Defence Army. Authorities have indicated that the group intended not only to target a mosque but also to attack accommodation facilities used to house migrants. This investigation is being conducted by police from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in response to rising concerns over violent far-right extremism.
Pollock faces three counts under the UK Terrorism Act. He is accused of possessing documents that could aid terrorists, specifically a “claim of responsibility by the Irish Defence Army for the burning of a mosque” and threats of further violence against facilities providing housing for migrants. Additionally, he is charged with withholding information that could prevent a terrorist act, particularly concerning the alleged attack on the mosque.
During the court session, a detective sergeant from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) stated that he could connect Pollock to the charges. The accused acknowledged his understanding of the allegations when asked by the judge, Peter Magill.
Pollock’s solicitor informed the court that no bail application would be made at this time due to an inability to provide a suitable bail address. However, an application is expected to be submitted in the following week. The judge ordered Pollock to remain in custody and scheduled his next court appearance via videolink for December 15, 2023.
On the same day Pollock was arrested, two additional individuals were detained in connection with the investigation. A 40-year-old woman arrested in Lurgan, Co Armagh, has since been released pending a report to prosecutors. Another man, aged 48, was arrested in Kilkeel, Co Down, and was also released following questioning.
The ongoing investigation highlights the growing concern over extremist activities in the region, with law enforcement agencies taking a proactive approach to prevent potential acts of violence.
