Epsom Racecourse Partners with Frank Warren to Revitalize Derby Day
Epsom Downs Racecourse is set to undergo significant changes for the upcoming Derby day in June 2024, as The Jockey Club collaborates with Frank Warren’s team to address a troubling decline in attendance. This year’s event saw only 22,000 attendees, a stark drop from 38,000 in 2019. The new initiative aims to enhance the overall experience and attract more racegoers to this prestigious event.
To combat the dwindling numbers, Epsom Downs has introduced a variety of changes, including the launch of a new DerbyFest area located on ‘The Hill.’ This initiative will be managed in partnership with Queensberry Promotions and is designed to increase local engagement and create a more vibrant atmosphere during the races. Other modifications include free entry for under-18s and complimentary parking throughout the site, all aimed at making the event more accessible.
The highlight of the Derby day, the main race, will feature an increased prize pot of £2 million, making it one of the richest races in the UK. Additionally, the Coronation Cup will be rescheduled to take place on the Saturday, enhancing the overall appeal of the weekend.
Jim Allen, General Manager of Epsom Downs, expressed his enthusiasm for the changes in a recent statement. He emphasized the historical significance of the Derby, referring to it as the “most important two and a half minutes in the racing and breeding industry.” Allen’s connection to the event runs deep, stemming from a lifelong passion for racing and a commitment to improving the experience for all involved.
“The changes we are making, both on and off the track, would not have been possible without crucial input from racegoers, annual members, the local community, and various stakeholders,” Allen stated. “It is so important for us to be continually evolving and improving to give everyone the best possible experience across the two days.”
The new initiatives reflect Epsom Downs’ dedication to fostering a sense of community and pride, not just for the event but for the surrounding area as well. The goal is to create an experience that resonates with everyone connected to British racing and solidifies the festival’s position as a world-class event.
As excitement builds for the Betfred Derby Festival, Epsom Downs aims to deliver an unforgettable experience that attracts a diverse audience and revitalizes interest in this iconic horse racing event. With plans underway, the racecourse is poised for a promising future that honors its rich heritage while appealing to a new generation of racing enthusiasts.
