The achievements of the Shannon Chamber of Commerce over the past three decades were commemorated at a special anniversary dinner held at Dromoland Castle Hotel. The event brought together leaders from various sectors, including government officials and industry representatives, to reflect on the Chamber’s influential role in the development of Shannon and its surrounding areas since its establishment in 1995.

Honoring Founding Visionaries

Among the notable speakers at the event was Timmy Dooley, Minister of State, who highlighted the significant impact of the Chamber’s activities. He addressed past and present Chamber presidents and directors, stating, “It’s important to set out how impactful your activities have been over the past 30 years.”

Mark Nolan, the current President of Shannon Chamber, reflected on the vision of the founding directors, including Chris Taylor, Arthur Hanly, Austin Collins, Michael Firtzpatrick, Risteard Crimmins, Mick Guinee, George O’Carroll, Paddy O’Rouke, and Aidan Quish. He noted that the Chamber was established to serve as the ‘Voice of Commercial Activity in Shannon and District.’

“We are gathered here in Dromoland to celebrate how your vision has grown into a dynamic, influential organization, representing a thriving and diverse business community,” Nolan remarked.

Looking to the Future

Nolan also expressed gratitude to the Chamber’s board, committees, and executive team, stating, “Your dedication and leadership continue to drive the organization forward.” He emphasized that the future of Shannon would focus on innovation, sustainability, and ambition. “Shannon Chamber will continue to champion the region, support business, and ensure that Shannon remains a place of opportunity, resilience, and growth,” he added.

The anniversary dinner included a special presentation to former director Dr. Michael Guinee. Chamber CEO Helen Downes honored him with a bespoke sculpture titled ‘Pools of Light,’ created by Irish Natural Stone sculptor Colin Grehan. This tribute recognized Guinee’s substantial contributions to the region.

“Back in 1995, Mick Guinee helped set the Chamber on the journey we celebrate tonight,” Downes said. “Even when he stepped aside from his directorship, he never really stepped away from the Chamber. He has continued to support us in countless unspoken ways, always quietly, always generously.”

Paddy Purcell, who served as Chamber president from 2001 to 2003, reflected on the early years of the organization. “In our early years, we could only imagine what we, as a group of determined businesspeople, hoped Shannon might become. To see the seeds we planted 30 years ago grow into what Shannon Chamber is today is a testament to everyone who has contributed to this great member-driven organization over the past three decades.”

Ian Talbot, CEO of Chamber Ireland, congratulated the Shannon Chamber on its successful three decades, expressing hopes for continued excellence and impact. “Over the past three decades, Shannon Chamber has not only championed the interests of local businesses but has also played a pivotal role in driving the economic and social development of the region,” he stated. “Your steadfast dedication to fostering growth, innovation, training, and collaboration stands as a testament to your vision.”

The anniversary celebration underscored the importance of community, collaboration, and forward-thinking as Shannon Chamber looks to its next chapter, continuing its commitment to supporting local businesses and fostering economic growth in the region.
