McGinley Wins Inaugural Cnoc Fola Duathlon with 70+ Competitors
UPDATE: The inaugural Cnoc Fola Duathlon took place today, July 15, 2023, on the stunning Wild Atlantic Way, drawing over 70 competitors eager to test their limits. The event featured a challenging course that included a 3km run, followed by a 20km cycle, and concluded with another 3km run.
Mark McGinley from Glenswilly claimed victory, completing the course in a remarkable 59:18. Just behind him was Shaun Stewart, securing second place at 1:00:57, while Noel Diver from the Rosses finished third with a time of 1:04:06.
In the women’s division, Eileen Lynch took first place, finishing the race in 1:23:10. Jenny McKinney followed closely in second with a time of 1:25:40, and Megan Bonner rounded out the top three with a finish of 1:28:34.
The competition was fierce in the Men’s Masters category, where Gerard McKinney clinched the top spot, finishing an impressive 4th overall at 1:05:21. In the Female Masters section, Anne Harkin led the way with a time of 1:31:27, followed by Áine Whoriskey at 1:36:22.
The event also welcomed team participants, with Teresa Gallagher’s team emerging victorious, finishing at 1:18:16.
Proceeds from the duathlon will benefit three local charities: Gaoth Dobhair Aontaithe, Ionad Phobail Chnoc Fola, and Donegal Cancer Flights and Services.
Organizers expressed their gratitude towards the numerous volunteers and marshals who ensured the event’s success, thanking everyone from course setup teams to those who provided refreshments. Special acknowledgments were made to Edward Harkin, the MC, and Michael Coyle, who ensured safety throughout the race.
The atmosphere was electric, with beautiful weather and robust community support contributing to the day’s success. Organizers hope this inaugural duathlon will become an annual event, expected to grow larger each year.
As the dust settles on this thrilling competition, the organizers shared their thanks to all participants, expressing excitement for next year’s event. The Cnoc Fola Duathlon has set a high bar for future competitions, making it a must-attend for endurance athletes and spectators alike.
