Motorist Banned for Two Years After Sulky Race Incident in Limerick
UPDATE: A motorist has been disqualified from driving for two years after being caught dangerously driving alongside an illegal sulky race on one of Limerick’s busiest roads. The incident occurred on the N20, Croom bypass at approximately 8:30 AM on June 1, 2024, raising serious safety concerns for other road users.
Garda Dermot Hallett from the divisional Roads Policing Unit testified in Kilmallock District Court that Robert Joseph McNamara, aged 25, was seen driving dangerously while Johnathon Lyons, aged 33, hung out of the passenger window, cheering on the horses racing on the busy bypass. The spectacle involved up to eight other vehicles, effectively blocking the road and endangering countless motorists.
Judge Patricia Harney highlighted the recklessness displayed by Mr. Lyons, pointing out that his actions were not fitting for a father of two young children. Despite his 47 previous convictions, including offenses related to theft and drink driving, the judge acknowledged a positive change in his behavior recently.
Mr. McNamara, a father of five, faced scrutiny over his involvement but maintained he stumbled upon the race rather than organizing it. His solicitor, Julianne Kiely, noted the seriousness of the incident, emphasizing both men’s lack of prior intention to participate in the illegal race.
The court has imposed a €500 fine on Mr. McNamara and a €300 fine on Mr. Lyons under the Control of Horses Act. Judge Harney deferred the start of Mr. McNamara’s disqualification until April 19, 2026, allowing for a brief reprieve.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding illegal sulky racing, which poses risks not only to participants but also to the general public. Authorities are urging greater enforcement of traffic laws in areas prone to such dangerous activities.
As the situation develops, community leaders and road safety advocates are calling for stricter measures to prevent further occurrences. Stay tuned for updates on this evolving story, as the implications for local road safety continue to unfold.
