National Poultry Housing Order Announced to Combat Bird Flu
URGENT UPDATE: The Department of Agriculture has just announced a nationwide poultry housing order aimed at curbing the rapid spread of H5N1 bird flu. This crucial measure will take effect on November 10, 2025, following a sharp rise in infections, including a recent outbreak impacting a commercial turkey flock in Carlow.
Over 40 cases of H5N1 have been confirmed across the country this year, prompting fears among farmers and wildlife officials alike. In a related move, Fota Wildlife Park will remain closed until the end of November to mitigate the risk of further outbreaks.
Nigel Sweetnam, chair of the IFA Poultry, emphasized the necessity of the housing order. He stated, “This measure is vital to eliminate the risk of bird flu spreading to farmed poultry.” The urgency of this order reflects the growing concern for both animal health and public safety.
The poultry housing order mandates that all birds must be kept indoors, a move designed to protect them from potential exposure to the virus carried by wild birds. Farmers are urged to comply immediately to safeguard their flocks and the broader agricultural community.
This announcement comes as part of a larger strategy to address the ongoing avian flu crisis, which has raised alarm bells across Europe. With cases escalating, affected regions are on high alert, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
WHAT’S NEXT: Poultry producers are advised to prepare for the implementation of this housing order. Furthermore, ongoing surveillance and testing will be crucial in assessing the effectiveness of these measures. As the situation develops, farmers and consumers alike will be watching closely for updates on the health of the poultry industry and any additional steps that may be required.
Stay tuned for the latest developments as authorities continue to combat the bird flu threat.
