New Fire Station Approved for Ballyshannon and Bundoran

UPDATE: In a decisive move, the Donegal County Council has just announced plans to construct a new fire station at Finner, strategically located to serve both Ballyshannon and Bundoran. This resolution puts an end to a heated debate that has lasted over 40 years regarding fire service provision in the area.

The new facility will feature two fire pumps, providing enhanced emergency response capabilities for both towns. The decision was reached during a council meeting on October 31, 2025, where local leaders expressed their commitment to improving public safety.

Garry Martin, Director of Services, emphasized the importance of this development, although he cautioned that securing funding for both this project and an additional fire station in Glencolmcille may prove challenging in the upcoming financial year. Nevertheless, an application will be submitted to the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management to seek necessary funds.

Cathaoirleach Michael Naughton highlighted the significance of this day for the people of South Donegal, stating, “Today is a special day for South Donegal, marking a critical step towards improved safety and emergency response.”
