New Signage at Riverside Drive Aims to End Overnight Parking Woes

UPDATE: New signage has been installed at Riverside Drive in Kilkenny City, aiming to eliminate long-standing overnight parking issues that have frustrated local residents. The initiative, championed by Cllr Eugene McGuinness and Cllr Sean Ó hArgain, is designed to address the growing concerns over camper vans obstructing driveways and causing disturbances.
Authorities confirmed that the new signs prohibiting overnight parking were put up earlier today. While not legally binding under current regulations, these signs serve as an advisory measure to discourage camper vans from parking in the residential area. “Riverside Drive is not suitable for camper vans,” Cllr McGuinness stated, emphasizing the necessity for action. “If you park a camper van here, it can effectively block one if not two driveways.”
The local council has been under pressure for months to take action, with both councillors advocating for solutions during meetings of the Kilkenny City Municipal District. The newly installed signs are expected to be disseminated through apps and online platforms utilized by caravan operators, ensuring that visitors are aware of the restrictions.
Cllr McGuinness noted that while he appreciates the camper van community, the signs are crucial in managing parking in the residential area. “These signs act as a deterrent,” he explained. “The situation will be monitored, and we believe the camper van community will respect these guidelines.”
In addition to the new parking measures, residents have expressed relief over improved signage directing visitors to the nearby St Luke’s General Hospital. Cllr McGuinness highlighted that confusion from drivers seeking the hospital had contributed to parking issues in Riverside Drive.
This development comes as local residents have voiced their frustrations over parking disruptions, with many welcoming the proactive response from local officials. Authorities are optimistic that this simple yet effective measure will significantly enhance neighborhood conditions and curb the challenges posed by overnight parking.
As the council continues to monitor the situation, residents are encouraged to report any ongoing issues related to parking violations. The community remains hopeful that the combination of new signage and increased awareness will restore peace to Riverside Drive.
