Protest Chaos Erupts in Dublin: Garda Injured Amid Violence
UPDATE: A night of unprecedented violence unfolded outside the Citywest Hotel in Saggart, County Dublin, as furious protestors clashed with police, injuring one Garda and causing chaos on the streets. This urgent situation erupted late last night, with reports confirming over 1,000 protestors gathered to protest the housing of asylum seekers in the hotel.
Protestors, some masked and armed with bricks, hurled projectiles at An Garda Síochána, who were deployed to safeguard the accommodation center. Chief Reporter Barry Whyte described the scene as one of “complete anarchy,” with Garda vans set ablaze and fireworks launched at officers. “It was complete chaos,” he stated on Newstalk Breakfast.
The violence escalated around 7 PM last night, following reports of an alleged assault of a child in Tusla care nearby. Eyewitnesses reported that the protest quickly turned aggressive, with calls for violence echoing through the crowd as protestors shouted, “Get them out!” and “Burn the hotel.”
Gardaí deployed 300 officers, including 150 members from the Public Order Unit, to manage the situation. Despite their efforts, the crowd’s aggression continued, resulting in injuries and criminal behavior. At one point, a Garda van was engulfed in flames, while debris was thrown, including Garda traffic cones and wheelie bins.
The violence lasted for approximately three hours, and calm was only restored after 10:30 PM. Authorities reported that one female Garda suffered a foot injury and required medical attention. In total, six individuals were arrested for public order offenses, and officials expressed relief that only one officer was injured during the upheaval.
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly condemned the actions of the protestors, referring to the event as an act of “thuggery” rather than a peaceful demonstration. “This was a mob intent on violence against Gardaí,” he stated. “I utterly condemn the attacks on Gardaí who did their jobs professionally and with great courage to keep people safe.” He emphasized that those responsible would face justice for their actions.
As investigations continue, authorities urge the public to remain calm and report any further disturbances. The situation remains tense as the community grapples with the aftermath of last night’s violence. Stay tuned for more updates as this developing story unfolds.
