URGENT UPDATE: Students across the Shannon Estuary region are called to action as the COMPASS competition launches, inviting Transition Year students from Limerick, Clare, Kerry, and North Tipperary to showcase their filmmaking skills. This competition, organized by the Shannon Foynes Port Company, emphasizes the importance of the Shannon Estuary and its potential to shape the future of the region.

Participating students are tasked with creating short films under the theme “Connecting Our Future,” focusing on sustainability through transport and renewable energy. The deadline for entry forms is December 12, with submissions due by March 6. The excitement culminates with the announcement of five shortlisted schools on March 20, just weeks before the Gala Awards Ceremony.

Patrick Keating, CEO of Shannon Foynes Port Company, stated, “We are really proud of COMPASS as it gives us the opportunity to engage students on a topic that is so important to their own future and our own.” He emphasized the estuary’s pivotal role in regional growth and connectivity, urging students to think innovatively and creatively about their films.

This year marks the fifth biannual hosting of the COMPASS competition, which includes a groundbreaking partnership with Technological University of the Shannon (TUS). Six students from TUS’s Department of Marketing, Enterprise & Digital Communications will promote the competition as part of their course, further enriching the educational experience. Dr. Derek McInerney from TUS remarked, “This collaboration demonstrates the strong partnerships TUS forms with industry… cultivating real-world experience.”

Students are encouraged to explore themes such as the strategic significance of the Shannon Estuary and the opportunities presented by Shannon Foynes Port. By addressing issues of connectivity—by sea, road, rail, and air—the competition aims to inspire a new generation of thinkers about sustainable regional development.

Entry forms are available via the Shannon Foynes Port Company website. Schools will receive an information pack upon entry, igniting excitement among students eager to make their mark.
