Traffic Chaos in Kilkenny: Officials Address Peak Hour Crisis
New reports confirm a **traffic crisis** is unfolding on **Freshford Road** in **Kilkenny**, with peak hour congestion described as a **‘ridiculous situation’** by local officials. During a plenary meeting of **Kilkenny County Council** this week, Cllr **Michael McCarthy** (Fianna Fáil) highlighted the severe delays commuters face, stating, “It’s mayhem during commuter hours.”
Authorities are sounding the alarm as the **traffic chaos** impacts daily life for residents and workers. Senior Roads Engineer **Seamus Kavanagh** acknowledged the growing congestion but suggested it has begun to “settle down.” However, he pointed to multiple factors contributing to the gridlock, noting that students are arriving at the new **Christian Brothers College** by **8:30 AM**, exacerbating the situation.
Kavanagh emphasized that the influx of hospital staff and city workers seeking routes into Kilkenny is compounding the issue. “People are trying to find different ways [to commute],” he stated, referencing the introduction of city buses and new active travel provisions aimed at alleviating congestion.
Cllr **Seán Ó hArgáin** (Labour) added that he has observed over **100 bicycles** parked at the new school, a sign of changing commuting habits. He expressed optimism that ongoing active travel initiatives might yield similar results at other educational facilities across the city.
However, Cllr **Eugene McGuinness** (Independent) warned that the **Freshford Road** traffic dilemma may persist for another **8 to 10 years**, until the long-anticipated northern ring road extension is completed.
To address the situation, Kavanagh confirmed that **traffic counters** will soon be deployed along Freshford Road to monitor congestion levels more accurately. This proactive measure aims to gather data that can inform future solutions and improve traffic flow in the area.
As discussions continue, the Kilkenny community is urged to stay informed about developments and adapt their commuting strategies accordingly. This situation remains fluid, and residents are encouraged to share their experiences and suggestions as the council works to tackle this pressing issue.
