UHG Warns of Severe Overcrowding in Emergency Department This Weekend
URGENT UPDATE: University Hospital Galway (UHG) is experiencing severe overcrowding in its Emergency Department, with high pressure on bed capacity expected to continue through the weekend. As of November 6, a total of 274 people visited the Emergency Department, prompting the hospital to issue a critical alert for the public.
Authorities report that the Emergency Department has been exceptionally busy, and this surge in patient numbers is anticipated to persist. UHG is urging the community to consider all available healthcare options before heading to the Emergency Department, as those requiring non-urgent care may face prolonged waiting times.
A spokesperson for UHG stated,
“If you or your family become unwell this weekend, please consider your local pharmacy or out of hours GP in the first instance.”
Furthermore, the Roscommon Injury Unit is open daily from 8am to 8pm, providing care for minor injuries such as breaks, sprains, burns, and wounds.
Due to the overwhelming number of patients and the lack of available beds, UHG is also postponing certain elective procedures. Patients affected by these delays are being contacted directly. The hospital has emphasized that urgent and time-sensitive cases will be prioritized, but all patients who present will receive treatment.
UHG officials acknowledge the distress caused by these delays and are implementing all possible measures to improve patient flow and reduce waiting times.
“The hospital acknowledges that these delays are very difficult for patients and their families and apologises for the inconvenience and distress these delays cause,”
the spokesperson added.
As UHG faces continued pressure from high attendance, patients are advised to remain patient and seek alternative care options when appropriate. The situation is evolving rapidly, and more updates are expected as the hospital navigates this challenging period.
Stay tuned for further developments on UHG’s efforts to manage the emergency influx and prioritize patient care.
