UPDATE: Severe flooding in Co Down has left numerous residents stranded in their homes following relentless rainfall. The deluge, particularly impacting Newcastle, has prompted a yellow weather warning that is now extended until 3 PM today, October 19, 2023.

The flooding, concentrated on Sunningdale Drive off Tullyhbrannigan Road, has become so severe that some individuals are unable to leave their residences. Local officials report that while roads are affected by surface water, no routes are currently deemed impassable.

Residents have resorted to using sandbags to protect their properties as the situation escalates. Jill Truesdale, a local councillor with the Alliance Party, expressed her alarm, stating, “I’ve never seen so much debris come down before; it’s quite frightening.” She and her family are currently trapped at home due to the hazardous conditions.

“It looks as if we are going to be [trapped] for a while because there’s also a high tide, so we won’t be leaving; it’s not worth the risk,” Truesdale told BBC News NI.

The Met Office had anticipated heavy rain across the region, predicting widespread accumulations of 20-30 mm and up to 60-100 mm over the Mournes, particularly in the early hours of Sunday. The weather warning is expected to disrupt bus and train services, causing longer journey times and increased risks of spray and flooding on roads.

Authorities warn that flooding could affect homes and businesses, with potential power supply interruptions. Residents are advised to check their properties for flood risks and to prepare emergency flood kits and plans.

Travelers are urged to stay informed about road conditions and to verify bus and train schedules to avoid delays. The community is rallying to cope with the impact of this extreme weather, emphasizing the need for vigilance as conditions evolve.

The situation remains developing, and residents are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates as authorities monitor the weather closely. This event underscores the urgent need for preparedness in the face of increasingly severe weather patterns.
