Urgent: Historic Kilkenny Church Transforms into Stunning Residence
BREAKING NEWS: The historic Old Church at White’s Castle in Knocktopher, Co. Kilkenny, has been transformed into a breathtaking private residence, captivating the community and architecture enthusiasts alike. This remarkable conversion, completed in the early 1990s, preserves the church’s rich heritage while providing modern comforts.
The transformation features a stunning living room adorned with a large fresco, a signed work that adds an artistic touch to the historic property. The belfry still houses a 200-year-old bronze bell, engraved with the names of its donors, which remains functional—a poignant link to the building’s past.
In a unique architectural twist, nearly all windows are lined on the outside with protective glass, enhancing both security and thermal insulation for the new occupants. The church, originally dedicated to St. David, was established on October 25, 1828, following a grant from Sir Robert Langrishe. It was built with a loan from the Board of First Fruits at a cost of £1,107.13.10.25 and was consecrated on November 7, 1829.
The church’s journey has not been without turmoil; it was tragically burned and subsequently rebuilt in 1912 under the guidance of architect J.F. Fuller. Before the Old Church’s establishment, the site served as a place of worship for the Church of Ireland, using the nearby Old Abbey Church until its construction.
This conversion has ignited a wave of interest in local heritage and architecture, showcasing how historical buildings can be revitalized for contemporary living while maintaining their historical significance. The community is excited to witness the blending of history and modernity in such a profound way.
As the new residents settle in, the Old Church stands as a testament to the area’s rich past and a bright future. Residents are eager to see how the property will inspire further preservation efforts within Co. Kilkenny.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the community reflects on its historic landmark’s new chapter.
