Urgent: Luas Green Line Extension to Finglas Approved for 2031

UPDATE: The Luas Green Line extension to Finglas has received crucial planning approval from An Coimisiún Pleanála, paving the way for enhanced public transport access in Dublin. This significant development was confirmed just yesterday, marking a transformative moment for local commuters.
The extension will create a direct line spanning 3.9 km from the existing station at Broombridge to a new station at Charlestown, with stops including Finglas Village and St Helena’s. With the potential to serve up to 60,000 people, this route is set to revolutionize how residents navigate the city.
The new tram line is expected to operate every 7.5 minutes, making it a reliable option for daily travel. Commuters can look forward to a journey time of approximately 30 minutes from Charlestown to College Green. The St Margaret’s Road stop will also feature a 350-vehicle park and ride, conveniently located near the M50 and M2 interchange.
The proposed route will travel through various green spaces, ensuring minimal disruption to residential areas. It will cross the Royal Canal and the River Tolka in Tolka Valley Park, moving through several parks and community spaces before reaching its destination.
Local politicians are already calling for the timeline to be expedited. Paul McAuliffe, Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin North-West, expressed optimism about advancing the project, stating, “We hope to bring it forward,” as it is “a very deliverable shovel-ready infrastructure project.” Meanwhile, Rory Hearne, Social Democrats TD for Dublin North-West, is advocating for funding to be fast-tracked, noting concerns that the project could be delayed “for another ten years.”
Citizens eagerly await further announcements regarding the timeline and funding for this vital extension. As this project unfolds, it promises to reshape public transport in Dublin, enabling better connectivity and reducing travel times for thousands.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
