Woman Sentenced for Theft in Kilkenny, Ordered to Stay Away

UPDATE: A young woman has been sentenced to prison for a series of thefts from local supermarkets in Kilkenny, prompting authorities to issue a warning for her to stay out of the area. Caroline Duffin, 16 Mount George, Wexford, pleaded guilty to three counts of theft during her court appearance at Kilkenny District Court.
The court heard that on August 30, 2024, while at a bar in Kilkenny, Duffin stole €105 from an unattended bag nearby. The money was never recovered. Just months later, on April 12, 2025, she struck again at Dunnes Stores on Kieran Street, taking a wallet containing €175 from an open handbag. That same day, she committed another theft at Dunnes Stores MacDonagh Junction, stealing a purse with €270 and bank cards.
Judge Geraldine Carthy noted that Duffin has an extensive criminal record, with 175 previous convictions, primarily for theft offenses. During the hearing, her solicitor, Alex Rafter, claimed that Duffin was “extremely remorseful” and had brought €300 to court as compensation for her victims. However, Carthy emphasized that Duffin had already received multiple opportunities to reform, including a suspended sentence just prior to her recent offenses.
The judge stated, “This lady has been afforded every opportunity,” highlighting the need to consider the victims in her decision. Ultimately, she imposed a six-month prison sentence on the theft charge. Furthermore, the judge set conditions for any potential appeal, mandating that Duffin must remain outside of Kilkenny.
Authorities are urging the public to be vigilant as they grapple with rising thefts in the area. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding opportunistic crime and the impact it has on community safety. As the situation develops, residents are advised to report any suspicious activity immediately.
Stay tuned for more updates on this troubling issue as details continue to emerge.
