Ex-Irish Rugby Stars Launch Charity Rowing Championship NOW
URGENT UPDATE: Several ex-Irish rugby legends, including David Wallace, Mal O’Kelly, and Gordon D’Arcy, are set to participate in a groundbreaking charity rowing event aimed at supporting seriously injured former players. The launch of the IRFU Charitable Trust Ireland Rugby Rowers Corporate Championship was announced today at the dmg media hub in Dublin, with the event scheduled for March 21, 2026.
This initiative will raise vital funds for the IRFU Charitable Trust, which provides essential support for ex-players facing life-changing injuries. Funds will go towards medical expenses, therapy, and necessary home modifications to aid recovery. The urgency of this event cannot be overstated; it aims to make a profound difference in the lives of those who have given so much to the sport.
Companies are now invited to register for the championship, competing in teams of 10, which must include a minimum of three women. Each team will have the opportunity to participate in a unique one-hour rowing challenge, aiming to cover the longest distance. With an entry fee of €5,000 per team, all proceeds will directly benefit the IRFU Charitable Trust.
Participating companies will also receive a comprehensive 12-week training program designed by elite international rower Ryan Corcoran. This initiative not only promotes physical fitness but also fosters team spirit and corporate social responsibility. It’s a chance for organizations to engage their employees in a meaningful way while supporting two impactful charities: Barretstown and the IRFU Charitable Trust.
The launch event coincided with the introduction of dmg’s new rugby brand, The Lineout, further solidifying the partnership between sports and charity. As the championship unfolds, the Rugby Rowers will also attempt to break a remarkable “four-in-a-row” World Record for the longest distance rowed in 24 hours by a mixed-gender, over-40 team.
The star-studded cast of Rugby Rowers includes not only D’Arcy and O’Kelly, but also Kevin McLaughlin, Bob Casey, and Stephen Ferris, alongside Nora Stapleton, a former Grand Slam winner, and Sanita Puspure, a World Champion and Olympian. This event promises to unite the Irish sporting community in a shared goal of charity and camaraderie.
As the date approaches, companies and individuals interested in participating are urged to act quickly to secure their spot in this unique event. The Rugby Rowers Corporate Championship not only offers an opportunity for competition but also a chance to make a lasting impact on the lives of former athletes who need support.
