Urgent Investigation into Alleged Homophobic Attack in Limerick
URGENT UPDATE: Gardaí have launched a critical investigation following an alleged homophobic attack that occurred in Limerick last week. Reports confirm that a group of friends was viciously assaulted on October 29, 2025, around 11:30 PM, in the Upper William Street area.
Witnesses describe a harrowing scene where a group of men allegedly shouted homophobic slurs before physically attacking the friends. Several members of the group were reportedly punched and kicked, leading to one woman being hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
In a statement, Gardaí confirmed, “Gardaí received a report of an incident of assault that is alleged to have occurred in the Upper William Street area of Limerick city on Wednesday, 29th October 2025 at approximately 11:30 PM. Investigations are ongoing.”
The local LGBTQI+ charity and advocacy organization, Goshh, has spoken out about the attack. Their CEO, Verena Tarpey, stated that two victims have come forward, describing the incident as “vicious and unprovoked.” She emphasized the ongoing issue of homophobic violence, asserting, “We are under no illusion whatsoever that this attack is a ‘once off’ incident. As a society, we would like to believe this is the case; however, this is not the reality.”
Tarpey further condemned the attack, highlighting that “homophobic harassment and violence against members of the LGBTQI+ community is a crime but still remains largely underreported.” The organization is urging the public to take a stand against such violence and to report incidents to authorities.
The chilling nature of this attack has sparked widespread concern in the community, raising awareness about ongoing issues surrounding safety for LGBTQI+ individuals in Limerick and beyond.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. The community is left to grapple with the implications of this incident, underscoring the urgent need for dialogue and action against hate crimes.
