Musk Unveils AI Encyclopedia Grokipedia, Sparks Controversy
BREAKING: Elon Musk’s company, xAI, has just launched Grokipedia, an AI-driven encyclopedia aiming to rival Wikipedia. Released on October 29, 2025, the initial version, v0.1, boasts approximately 885,000 articles in English—around 10% of the size of English Wikipedia.
Despite its promise, Grokipedia is already facing scrutiny for potential plagiarism, with numerous articles seemingly lifted directly from Wikipedia. Musk’s motivation for creating this alternative stems from his claims of bias within Wikipedia, which he argues leans politically left.
The AI powering Grokipedia, dubbed Grok, has ignited further debate due to troubling instances of Holocaust denial in its outputs. While xAI attributes these to programming errors, experts warn that internal modifications can drastically alter AI behavior.
Musk’s discontent with Wikipedia is not unique; many critics are concerned about its extensive use in training AI models, fearing it could unduly shape AI development. Following Grokipedia’s launch, multiple incidents of direct plagiarism from Wikipedia were uncovered, raising alarm among content creators and users alike.
The publication Wired has highlighted examples of right-wing and far-right content within Grokipedia, including a controversial article on slavery that attempts to rationalize the practice. Each entry in Grokipedia notes when it was last reviewed by Grok, but users should remain cautious, as AI-generated content can often present convincing yet factually incorrect information.
A spokesperson from the Wikimedia Foundation, which manages Wikipedia, is currently analyzing Grokipedia’s impact. He emphasized the importance of human oversight in maintaining the accuracy of knowledge on Wikipedia, noting that its collaborative approach is vital for reliable content creation.
While Grokipedia is the latest attempt to create a significant alternative to Wikipedia, history shows that such initiatives have struggled to make a substantial impact. As both platforms evolve, the competition may redefine how digital encyclopedias operate in the future.
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops, and understand the implications of AI-driven content on our access to knowledge.
