UPDATE: A 38-year-old man has been remanded in custody following charges linked to a thwarted terror plot targeting a mosque in Northern Ireland. Connor Pollock, from Ballynahinch, appeared in court today, where he faces serious allegations under the UK Terrorism Act.

The charges stem from a cross-border police investigation into a group known as the Irish Defence Army, accused of planning an attack on both a mosque and accommodations for migrants. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that Pollock is charged with three offences, including possessing documents that could assist terrorists and withholding information that could prevent an act of terrorism.

During the brief hearing at Downpatrick Magistrates’ Court, Pollock acknowledged understanding the charges. He is specifically accused of possessing a Galaxy Samsung phone, which authorities believe was intended for use in terrorist activities. No bail application was made today due to the lack of a suitable address, but his legal team indicated that they will seek bail next week.

The court was informed by a PSNI detective sergeant that Pollock could be connected to the ongoing investigation into violent far-right extremism, which spans both sides of the Irish border.

“We are taking this matter extremely seriously,”

the detective stated, emphasizing the potential threats posed by such extremist groups.

Pollock’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, December 15, where he will appear via videolink. He was arrested earlier this week, alongside two others: a 40-year-old woman from Lurgan, who has since been released pending further investigations, and a 48-year-old man from Kilkeel, who was released after questioning.

This alarming case highlights the pressing issue of far-right extremism and its potential impact on communities in Northern Ireland. Authorities are urging vigilance and cooperation from the public as they continue their investigations.

The situation remains fluid, and updates will follow as new information emerges.
