RDS Visual Art Awards 2025 Celebrates New Talent at RHA Gallery
The RDS Visual Art Awards 2025 is showcasing the work of ten emerging artists at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) in Dublin. The exhibition runs until January 26, 2025, and highlights a diverse range of themes and artistic expressions from Ireland’s latest generation of creative voices. This annual event, which has supported artists since its inception in 1860, aims to provide a crucial platform for graduates at a pivotal stage in their careers.
The exhibition features installations that resonate with contemporary issues, including the housing crisis, emigration, and identity. This year, Niamh O’Malley, who represented Ireland at the 2022 Venice Biennale, served as the artist curator, guiding the selected graduates in refining their work into impactful presentations. Her involvement underscores the vital role a curator plays in bridging the gap between emerging talent and the broader art world.
Innovative Works Reflecting Timely Themes
Each artist brings a unique perspective to the exhibition. For instance, Dineen presents a haunting film that blends ritual and myth, showcasing the evocative landscapes of County Kerry. “Ireland is in a really positive place creatively, and this show is emblematic of the range and quality of the work being produced,” Dineen remarked, emphasizing the need for continued support and funding for artists.
Another standout is Horsch, whose vibrant fabric installation tackles themes of bodily functions and societal shame. “Collaborating with a professional team taught me how to communicate my vision clearly,” Horsch stated, reflecting on the importance of visibility and support in developing an artistic practice.
The exhibition also features Mannion, whose sculptural works draw inspiration from craft, farming, and the land. Addressing the current housing crisis, Mannion noted, “Supports like the basic income for the arts are essential,” highlighting the ongoing challenges artists face in balancing their creative pursuits with financial stability.
A Platform for Community and Connection
In addition to individual expressions, some installations weave narratives that connect to Dublin’s urban landscape. McSweeney employs sound art, with monologues playing through heating vents and drain pipes, giving voice to the stories behind the city’s vacant buildings. “The biggest challenge is carving out the time to think and make while also working,” she explained, underscoring the difficulties many artists encounter post-graduation.
The exhibition is not just an opportunity for personal growth; it fosters a sense of community among the artists. Muniz, who explores the interplay between land and joy in a two-channel video work, expressed gratitude for being selected. “It is a massive validation,” he said, emphasizing the impact of sharing their work with a broader audience.
The significance of this year’s awards is further amplified by the recognition of the artists’ struggles, particularly around the cost of living and the need for sustainable practices. Yris, whose ceramic tiles address the housing crisis, stated, “Being shortlisted is an honour, a real validation of the work.” She shared the difficulties many face in securing accommodation and studio space while trying to sustain their artistic practices.
The RDS Visual Art Awards exhibition at the RHA Gallery not only highlights the creative talent emerging from Irish art schools but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges artists face. It celebrates the hard work of both the artists and their mentors, providing a vibrant space for innovative ideas and artistic exploration in a rapidly changing society.
