University of Limerick Study Unveils Impact of Trust in Youth Justice

Research from the University of Limerick highlights the importance of trust-based relationships between youth justice practitioners and young people in reducing offending behaviours. The study, conducted by the Research Evidence into Policy, Programmes and Practice (REPPP) team within the School of Law, examined the dynamics of these relationships within Ireland’s Youth Diversion Projects (YDPs).

The findings reveal that effective and supportive professional relationships are key to fostering positive outcomes. Young people who experience such relationships tend to exhibit increased trust in adults and services, better coping mechanisms for challenges, and enhanced confidence and self-worth. According to Dr. Sean Redmond, Adjunct Professor of Youth Justice and Director of REPPP, these factors are crucial in guiding young individuals away from criminal activities and towards more constructive engagements with education and community life.

Transformational Relationships in Youth Justice

Dr. Redmond noted the significance of relational dynamics in the youth justice system. “Relationships cannot change the world or the structural inequalities that many of our young people face,” he stated. “However, they are agile, endlessly flexible, and resilient. They can help young people navigate adversities, seize opportunities, and connect with affirming networks.”

The research culminated in the publication of the Better Together: Developing Relational Practice to Effect Change in Young People’s Offending Behaviour report. This work has directly influenced national guidance for YDPs, reinforcing the need for ongoing investment in relationship-building strategies to effectively address youth offending in Ireland.

Minister of State with Responsibility for Youth Justice, Niall Collins TD, emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting youth diversion and justice services. “This investment provides invaluable support to An Garda Síochána in addressing youth crime and protecting communities,” he said. Collins praised the dedication of approximately 550 youth justice workers, who play a pivotal role in changing young lives for the better.

He added that the initiatives facilitated by these workers help steer young people away from paths leading to re-offending and imprisonment, underscoring the societal benefits of the YDPs.

A Collaborative Approach to Youth Justice

The REPPP Action Research Project aimed to bridge the knowledge gap and produce practical guidance for YDP practitioners. Over a three-year period, the project involved collaboration with 16 YDPs across Ireland, engaging 60 youth justice practitioners, managers, and Gardaí, as well as 27 young individuals who provided insights into their experiences with youth justice services.

This collaborative effort ensured that the research and resulting guidance were co-designed with practitioners, blending local insights with international evidence. Moving forward, REPPP plans to support the implementation of this guidance across the YDP network through various initiatives, including webinars and events.

Additionally, a six-part podcast series is set to launch soon, hosted by James Leonard, known for his work on the acclaimed The Two Norries podcast. Leonard, who has firsthand experience with addiction and imprisonment, stresses the critical nature of relationships in youth work. “If you haven’t got a good relationship with your young person, your evidence-based treatments will fall by the wayside,” he commented.

The research received funding from the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, highlighting a collaborative commitment to addressing youth offending through evidence-based practices and supportive relationships.

As Ireland continues to refine its approach to youth justice, the insights from this study signal a potential shift towards more relationally-focused practices that could transform the landscape of youth services for years to come.
