Ireland’s Wedding Trends Unveiled: Summer vs. Winter Showdown
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has released new data revealing the most popular wedding dates in Ireland, highlighting the ongoing debate between summer and winter weddings. The study, which analyzed marriages from 2011 to 2014, shows that while winter months hold a significant appeal, summer remains a strong contender.
New Year’s Eve emerged as the most favored wedding day, with an average of 189 marriages annually. Following closely behind are several days during the festive season: December 30 ranks second, December 28 is third, and December 29 comes in fourth. The data indicates that the allure of Christmas rings true for many, but not for those looking to tie the knot on Christmas Day itself, which recorded zero marriages during the surveyed years.
In contrast, summer also showcases its popularity, with August leading as the most favored month for weddings, averaging 2,733 ceremonies per year. The summer days of August 3, 4, and 5 occupy the fifth, sixth, and seventh spots for individual wedding days. Following August, July and September also rank highly, with 2,446 and 2,333 weddings, respectively.
The CSO’s findings suggest a notable preference for summer weddings among Irish couples, leading the overall count of marriages. Yet, December remains a strong contender for those celebrating during the holidays. Interestingly, February and January are the least popular months for weddings, with averages of just 803 and 612 marriages, respectively.
Examining specific days, the day before St. Patrick’s Day stands out, recording an average of 90 weddings each year, making it the most popular option in the first five months of the year.
In total, 20,348 marriages were registered in Ireland in 2024, the final year included in this analysis. The average age of brides and grooms was 35.9 years and 37.7 years, respectively. Furthermore, Fridays emerged as the top day of the week for weddings, while Tuesdays were the least popular.
For those interested in exploring the popularity of their chosen wedding date, the CSO has made this information accessible on its website.
The insights from this study reflect evolving trends in wedding preferences, revealing that while winter weddings maintain a festive charm, summer months continue to attract substantial numbers of couples.
