Electric Picnic 2025: Highlights and Challenges in Stradbally
Eighty thousand attendees gathered in Stradbally, Co Laois, over the weekend for the Electric Picnic festival, a major event in Ireland’s arts and culture calendar. This year’s festival showcased a blend of music, culture, and community spirit, marking an increase in attendance from last year’s 75,000.
Memorable Performances Shine at Electric Picnic
The festival kicked off with an impressive performance by pop star Chappell Roan, who captivated the audience with an elaborate 80-minute set that included theatrical visuals reminiscent of a Disney villain’s lair. Roan, supported by her all-female band, delivered a spectacular show that set a high bar for the rest of the festival. Festival-goers were treated to a true showcase of live instrumentation, making her performance a standout moment.
Following Roan, the Irish rap group Kneecap took to the main stage on Saturday afternoon, delivering an equally electrifying performance. Their set was praised for its energy and engaging lyrics, earning them a spot as one of the festival’s highlights.
Despite concerns over the weather, attendees were greeted with unexpected sunshine on Friday, which gave way to less severe conditions for the remainder of the weekend. While forecasts had predicted a washout, the reality was more favorable, allowing festival-goers to enjoy the outdoor festivities.
Among the notable personalities present was American comedian Rosie O’Donnell, who embraced the festival atmosphere by mingling with fans. Other celebrities spotted included Lewis Capaldi and DJ Fatboy Slim, who entertained crowds with his Saturday night set.
Festival Atmosphere and Amenities
The festival featured a vibrant array of activities, including the Trenchtown Dub Club, which spun reggae tracks from late afternoon until dawn. The atmosphere around this area was lively, with enthusiastic crowds enjoying the music.
One of the notable changes this year was the introduction of the new Glitterball campsite, which received positive feedback for its spaciousness and improved facilities. Attendees appreciated the option to select their camping location, contributing to a more relaxed environment.
While many aspects of Electric Picnic were well-received, some challenges did arise. Food prices drew criticism, with items such as burgers priced at €20 and halloumi pitas at €18. These costs prompted some attendees to reconsider their dining options, though drinks were perceived as slightly more reasonable at €7-€9 for a pint.
Festival-goers also expressed frustration over the opening of reserved camping areas as overflow sites, leading to overcrowding in certain areas. The influx of 5,000 additional attendees contributed to this situation, causing some discomfort among those who had booked specific pitches in quieter zones.
Despite these issues, Electric Picnic 2025 succeeded in providing a memorable experience for many of its visitors. The diverse lineup, featuring headliners such as Hozier, Sam Fender, and Kings of Leon, offered something for everyone, showcasing both established stars and emerging talent.
As the festival concluded, it left a lasting impression on both performers and attendees, reinforcing its reputation as one of Ireland’s premier cultural events.
