Irish Cancer Society COO Highlights Research Potential at LUH

The Chief Operations Officer of the Irish Cancer Society, Edel Shovlin, announced that there is potential for increased research initiatives at Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH). Shovlin made this statement during a recent event held on September 10, 2025, where a cheque for nearly €223,000 was presented by Relay for Life Donegal. This amount represents the proceeds from this year’s fundraising event.
Shovlin, who hails from Donegal, emphasized the importance of expanding research efforts in the region. She noted that the Irish Cancer Society allocates substantial funding to support services in Donegal, including night nursing and transportation for patients attending medical appointments. This financial backing underlines the commitment to enhancing cancer care and support within the community.
During her address, Shovlin expressed optimism about the possibilities for collaboration between local healthcare providers and research institutions. She highlighted that leveraging the resources available at LUH could lead to significant advancements in understanding and treating cancer.
Shovlin stated, “We are committed to improving the lives of those affected by cancer. By expanding research at LUH, we can ensure that our efforts are not only felt locally but also contribute to wider scientific knowledge.” The initiative aims to create a robust research framework that can address the specific needs of cancer patients in Donegal and beyond.
The event also served as a platform to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of volunteers and participants involved in the Relay for Life campaign. Their efforts have made a tangible impact on cancer services in the area, reinforcing the importance of community support in battling the disease.
The funds raised will assist the Irish Cancer Society in providing essential services that directly benefit patients and their families. These services are crucial for ensuring that individuals facing cancer have access to the support they need during challenging times.
As the Irish Cancer Society continues to advocate for improved cancer care, Shovlin’s remarks signal a forward-looking approach to health research in Donegal. The potential collaboration with LUH represents a significant step towards enhancing local healthcare infrastructure and improving patient outcomes.
The commitment to research not only reflects the society’s mission but also aims to inspire further involvement from local stakeholders and healthcare professionals. By fostering a culture of inquiry and collaboration, the Irish Cancer Society hopes to lead the way in innovative cancer care solutions that are accessible to everyone.
