Michael Flatley Withdraws from Presidential Race, Prioritizes Health

Michael Flatley, renowned for his role in the acclaimed dance production “Riverdance,” has announced his withdrawal from the presidential race in Ireland, citing health concerns and a commitment to his family. Flatley, who had previously expressed interest in running for the Áras, the official residence of the President of Ireland, emphasized that the timing was not right for him to pursue this significant role.
During an appearance on the Late Late Show on September 12, 2025, Flatley stated, “It would be mendacious of me to say that I have a clean bill of health right now.” His comments reflect the ongoing challenges he faces following a cancer diagnosis that led to surgery in January 2023. Although he is currently undergoing treatment, he conveyed a sense of optimism about his recovery, saying, “The good times outweigh the bad. I feel great. I feel like I’m on the way back.”
Flatley Reflects on His Decision
Flatley’s initial announcement of his candidacy came unexpectedly in late July when his barrister revealed plans for him to return to Ireland and seek the presidency. However, after much contemplation, he concluded that he could better serve the Irish people by continuing his current work in promoting Irish culture internationally.
“I decided the timing wasn’t right,” he explained. “It’s a very lonely place.” Flatley acknowledged the weight of the presidential role, calling it “the greatest honour that any person could possibly have in life.” He expressed his best wishes to the other confirmed candidates: Catherine Connolly, Heather Humphreys, and Jim Gavin.
In his conversation with host Patrick Kielty, Flatley reflected on the emotional journey that prompted his decision. He recalled moments spent contemplating his future while walking on the beach in Doonbeg, where he envisioned the possibility of running for office. Ultimately, he recognized that pursuing the presidency would not be fair to the Irish people given his current circumstances.
Health Challenges and Advocacy
Flatley’s health issues have profoundly shaped his perspective in recent years. He candidly shared the impact of losing three close friends to cancer, including his best friend, Eddie Jordan, a prominent figure in Formula One, who passed away in March 2023. These personal losses have driven Flatley to become actively involved with Breakthrough Cancer Research, a charity dedicated to advancing cancer treatment and research.
“I can promise you, when you’re lying on that hospital bed, they’re the people that you think about,” he said, praising the charity’s commitment to their mission. Flatley also acknowledged the role of faith in his journey, emphasizing the importance of resilience and the fighting spirit he inherited from his father. “There’s a little bit of a fighter in me, and you have to rely on that at times like this,” he remarked.
While he may have stepped back from a political role, Flatley remains deeply committed to his Irish heritage. He expressed his pride in being Irish, stating, “I’ve travelled the world, and I might have been built in Chicago, but I’m 100% Irish.” His passion for promoting Ireland as a remarkable nation continues to be a focal point of his career.
As Flatley moves forward, he is focused on his health and community engagement, demonstrating a heartfelt dedication to the values he holds dear. His decision to withdraw from the presidential race underscores the importance of personal well-being and the responsibilities that come with public service.
