Belfast City Council Approves Historic Assembly Rooms Purchase

The Assembly Rooms Alliance has applauded the decision made by Belfast City Council to unanimously approve the purchase of the historic Assembly Rooms and adjacent properties for £2.7 million. This resolution came during a council meeting on September 1, 2023, marking a significant step towards preserving and revitalizing an essential cultural landmark in Belfast.
Following negotiations with the current owners, Castlebrooke, the council has reached an agreement on the purchase terms. With the council’s decision now official, the next steps involve completing the necessary legal documentation to finalize the acquisition. This initiative is crucial for restoring the building and ensuring its future as a vibrant cultural hub for both local residents and visitors.
Future Plans for the Assembly Rooms
Over the past four years, the Assembly Rooms Alliance has advocated for this purchase, recognizing the building’s historical importance. The council’s decision comes amid financial constraints, and the Alliance commended the councillors for acknowledging the shortcomings of their previous reliance on Castlebrooke. By choosing an alternative path, they have taken a proactive stance to secure the future of the Assembly Rooms.
Once ownership is transferred, the council plans to implement immediate security measures to protect the building and prevent any further deterioration. An options appraisal will be conducted to explore potential future uses for the Assembly Rooms, with the intention of dedicating it exclusively to public and cultural activities.
The Assembly Rooms Alliance has already shared its vision for the building’s future. They propose that the grand banking hall, which can accommodate up to 250 attendees, serves as a multi-functional venue for concerts, exhibitions, conferences, and theatre. This concept is rooted in the building’s rich history, particularly its role during the Enlightenment era, which included significant events such as the gathering of blind harpers in 1792 and the involvement of the United Irishmen, including the McCracken family.
Exploring the Troubles and Peace
One of the key proposals is the establishment of the Museum of the Troubles and Peace within the Assembly Rooms. This museum aims to utilize cutting-edge technology to present diverse perspectives on the Troubles, ensuring a balanced narrative that celebrates the Irish Peace Process. Its central and neutral location makes it an ideal site for exploring these complex historical experiences.
While the Alliance recognizes that other proposals for the building may arise, they emphasize the necessity for a transparent process in evaluating all options. Councillors are encouraged to ensure public engagement during the options appraisal, avoiding a closed-door decision-making process. The Assembly Rooms Alliance has expressed a strong desire to see the building reach its full potential as soon as possible, reflecting the community’s aspirations for this historic site.
As the council prepares to move forward, the commitment to cultural preservation and community engagement remains at the forefront, promising an exciting new chapter for the Assembly Rooms and its role in Belfast’s cultural landscape.
