Sean Kelly to Lead Three Counties Cycle in Limerick This September

Sean Kelly, one of the most celebrated figures in cycling history, will return to Limerick this September to lead the Sean Kelly Three Counties Cycle. Scheduled for September 21, 2024, this event invites cycling enthusiasts to join the legendary athlete, who has achieved remarkable milestones throughout his career, including 193 wins and nine monument victories.

Often referred to as the “King of the Classics,” Kelly’s impressive accolades also include seven consecutive Paris–Nice titles and four green jerseys from the Tour de France. The Three Counties Cycle, now in its fifth year, has quickly established itself as a prominent event in the cycling calendar, drawing participants from across Ireland and beyond.

Supporting Down Syndrome Limerick

This year’s cycle will take place in support of Down Syndrome Limerick (DSL), with all proceeds directed toward essential services such as speech and language therapy, adult education, and employment support. These services are crucial for individuals with Down syndrome and receive no government funding.

Ellen Tuffy, treasurer of DSL, expressed gratitude for the event’s impact: “The Sean Kelly Three Counties Cycle is our top fundraiser each year. Funds raised go directly to services we rely on, and we’re incredibly grateful to all the cyclists, volunteers, sponsors, and of course, Sean Kelly himself.”

Participants can choose between 50 km and 100 km routes. The event, which starts at TUS Limerick, promises a fully marshalled and insured experience, ensuring safety and support throughout the ride. Organizers have planned for ample refreshments to keep all riders energized.
