Kilkenny Launches 2026 Fadó, Fadó Competition for Young Historians

The Fadó, Fadó: Sparking Memories competition returns to Kilkenny for 2026, inviting students to explore and share their local history through creative projects. This initiative, which showcases students’ passion and ingenuity, is organized by Kilkenny Local Studies, the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, and the Rothe House Trust.

Last year’s competition saw local pupils impress judges with a variety of innovative projects. These ranged from recreating a perfectly preserved cottage to uncovering the stories behind significant historical items auctioned in a former Castlecomer cinema. The success of these entries highlighted how young individuals are not only learning about history but actively breathing life into it.

Competition Details and Themes

For the upcoming 2026 edition, the competition will maintain its engaging spirit while introducing new elements. The primary school theme, Stories from Lives of People in the Past, encourages students to explore histories from their locality or even their own families. This category is open to Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Class students.

Meanwhile, secondary school students in Third Year and Transition Year can participate under the theme The Past is My Place. Each theme aims to inspire students to delve into their creativity while reflecting on their heritage and community.

New to the organizing team is Patrick Kavanagh of the Kilkenny Library Service Local Studies, whose enthusiasm for local history aligns perfectly with the competition’s goals. Additionally, Martin O’Neill, a history teacher at St Kieran’s College and a familiar voice on the Ceol agus Comhrá programme on Community Radio Kilkenny City, will also lend his expertise to support participating students.

Entry Information and Prizes

Entries for the Fadó, Fadó competition are now open, with guidelines and entry forms available at www.kilkennylibrary.ie. The deadline for submissions is set for 4 PM on February 13, 2026. Winners will be announced on April 10, and a prize-giving ceremony is scheduled for 5 PM on April 21 at the Mayfair Library.

Each category winner will receive €100 and a winner’s cup, while runners-up will be awarded €75 and a medal. Additionally, five projects from each category will be recognized as Highly Commended, receiving a special certificate. First and second prize-winners will also enjoy a family pass to visit Rothe House, further enriching their historical explorations.

Geraldine Tierney from the Kilkenny Archaeological Society expressed her excitement for this year’s projects, stating, “Given the high quality and range of projects entered last year, we can’t wait to find out what our young historians will tackle this year.” The Fadó, Fadó competition not only aims to cultivate a love for history among students but also fosters a sense of community and engagement with the local heritage.
