Cleary Centre in Donegal Town Set for Major Rebuild by 2026

Plans for a significant redevelopment of the Cleary Centre in Donegal Town are moving forward, with construction anticipated to commence in 2026. The project is currently advancing through the detailed design phase and is expected to go out to tender by the final quarter of this year.
During a recent meeting of the Regional Health Forum West, Councillor Michael Naughton received an update on the project, emphasizing to the Health Service Executive (HSE) that the existing facilities are inadequate for the needs of adults with disabilities. Cllr Naughton highlighted that staff are currently working out of a warehouse, expressing concern over the lengthy wait for progress, which has extended beyond two years.
“Until we see machines on the ground, we won’t believe this will happen,” Cllr Naughton stated, reflecting the urgency of the situation.
The original Cleary Centre has been closed since 2014. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the building served a temporary role as a test centre for the southern region of Donegal. The planned new centre will be constructed on the same site at Drumlonagher.
Features of the New Centre
The new Cleary Centre is designed to offer a range of facilities aimed at enhancing the quality of care and support for its users. The plans include several therapeutic spaces both indoors and outdoors. Notable features will encompass four large multipurpose rooms, complete with a secure outdoor area. Additionally, there will be a physiotherapy room, a regulation room, and a training kitchen designed for practical learning.
Other essential facilities will include a laundry room and a spacious dining area. Outdoor amenities are set to feature recreational spaces as well as a greenhouse, providing opportunities for gardening and outdoor activities.
The redevelopment of the Cleary Centre represents a significant investment in the well-being of adults with disabilities in Donegal Town, with the goal of creating a supportive environment tailored to their needs. As the project advances, the community and stakeholders are keenly awaiting tangible signs of progress.
