Urgent Recall of Pasta and Protein Bars in Irish Supermarkets

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has announced an urgent recall of several food products, including popular pasta and protein bars, due to potential health risks. Consumers are advised to check their fridges and pantries as these items have been available in major supermarkets across Ireland, including Lidl, Dunnes, and SuperValu. The FSAI has instructed retailers to withdraw the affected batches from their shelves and to display recall notices prominently at points of sale.
Details of the Recall
Among the products recalled is the Café Sol Pesto Pasta and Chicken (224g), distributed by Freshways. This batch has been flagged due to the detection of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious illness. The affected product carries a use-by date of September 25, 2025. The FSAI warns that symptoms of a listeria infection may include mild flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, infants, and individuals with weakened immune systems, face higher risks. The incubation period for listeriosis can range from three weeks to 70 days.
Another significant recall involves the Toxic Waste Sour Slushy Freeze and Squeeze products, which have been withdrawn due to elevated levels of glycerol. This additive, while approved for use in the European Union, can cause side effects in young children, including headaches and vomiting, if consumed in large quantities. The FSAI notes that glycerol serves as a sugar substitute and helps maintain the slushy texture in these drinks.
Allergen Alerts and Consumer Safety
In addition to the above recalls, the FSAI has issued allergen alerts concerning several other products. Shoppers are warned not to consume Lidl’s Healthy Fit Hazelnut Nougat Vegan Protein Bars, as these items lack proper labeling regarding the presence of canola rapeseed protein isolate, which may elicit allergic reactions in those sensitive to mustard and related products.
The FSAI has also cautioned consumers about Bare Pantry’s dark chocolate-coated products, which may contain undeclared milk. This poses a risk for individuals with milk allergies or intolerances, making these products potentially unsafe.
As these recalls unfold, consumers are urged to stay informed and take precautions. The FSAI continues to update its website with the latest information regarding food safety and recalls.
