Councillor Cat O’Driscoll Assaulted in Dublin: Calls for Action

A Social Democrats councillor was assaulted in Dublin city while on her way to canvass for local elections two weeks ago. Cat O’Driscoll, representing the Cabra/Glasnevin constituency, reported that an unknown man struck her in the face during the random attack, which took place shortly before 18:00 on a weekday.
Speaking on RTÉ’s Drivetime, O’Driscoll described the incident, stating that she was walking and listening to a podcast when the assailant approached her. “I felt an incredible force into the side of my temple,” she recounted, noting that the blow knocked her glasses and headphones off. Despite the significant impact, she managed to maintain her balance, while the attacker “strolled away” without breaking his stride.
Immediate Aftermath and Reaction
The councillor expressed her shock at the unprovoked nature of the attack, which left her feeling startled in the middle of the street. A passing woman in a car stopped to check on her and advised her to contact the Gardaí, yet O’Driscoll lamented the lack of further assistance from bystanders. “I would hope anytime someone finds themselves in any sort of difficulty that they could rely on people around to offer them assistance,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of community support.
Following the incident, O’Driscoll reported it to the Gardaí, who she described as “very helpful.” Although she experienced soreness in her head, she continued with her day, only realizing the full extent of her injuries the following day. “It took me a few days to really recognize the impact on me,” she added, noting the lingering effects of the assault on her sense of security.
Broader Implications and Calls for Change
O’Driscoll, who is also a prominent women’s safety campaigner and chair of the Social Democrats’ women council, highlighted the need for increased dialogue surrounding gender-based violence. She urged her male colleagues to initiate discussions on the prevalence of such violence in society. “It’s not going to stop me from being out and about, but it’s definitely got those creeping thoughts in,” she said, acknowledging the heightened vigilance many women and vulnerable groups experience in public spaces.
As part of her commitment to improving safety, O’Driscoll is advocating for better infrastructure, such as improved street lighting, to enhance public safety. She believes that these changes are essential to ensure that individuals feel secure in their communities.
The incident has sparked conversations about personal safety in urban areas, urging local authorities to take proactive measures. With incidents of random violence posing a growing concern, the importance of community vigilance and support cannot be overstated.
