Watford to Part Ways with Coach Pezzolano After Just Five Months

Watford Football Club is preparing to terminate the contract of head coach Paulo Pezzolano after only five months at the helm. The decision follows a series of meetings among the club’s leadership on October 3, 2023, where a parting of ways with the 42-year-old coach was anticipated.
Pezzolano was appointed on May 13, 2023, stepping in for Tom Cleverley, who was dismissed just one week prior. His tenure has been characterized by inconsistent performances, despite significant investment in new players during the transfer window. Under Pezzolano, Watford has competed in only ten matches across all competitions, amassing a disappointing five points from the first six fixtures in the Sky Bet Championship. However, the team has shown some improvement recently, securing seven points from their last three matches.
Potential Successor and Historical Context
Watford is reportedly eyeing Javi Gracia as the frontrunner to take over from Pezzolano. Gracia previously managed the club for 66 games between January 2018 and September 2019, a period during which he earned a solid reputation among the fanbase. His familiarity with the club’s culture and operations could be a significant advantage as Watford seeks to stabilize its performance in the league.
If Pezzolano’s departure is confirmed, he will join the ranks of the club’s shortest-serving managers in history. His tenure could become the third briefest, following Oscar Garcia, who managed just four games in September 2014, and Billy McKinlay, who oversaw only two matches from September to October 2014.
In a recent match on October 4, 2023, Pezzolano’s side managed to secure a 2-1 comeback victory against Oxford United, providing a flicker of hope for the coach. Despite this win, the overall performance metrics and club expectations appear to have led to a swift reassessment of his position.
As Watford prepares for a potentially significant managerial shift, the focus will remain on improving results and securing a stronger position in the league as they aim for the promotion play-off spots.
