Stumptown Makes History as First Irish Winner of Velka Pardubicka

Stumptown has etched its name in history by becoming the first Irish-trained horse to win the prestigious Velka Pardubicka in the Czech Republic. The eight-year-old thoroughbred, trained by Gavin Cromwell, secured victory on October 8, 2023, in the 135th edition of this challenging race. With Keith Donoghue in the saddle, Stumptown triumphed over a field of 15 competitors, finishing a length and three-quarters ahead of High In The Sky, ridden by Jan Faltejsek.

The Velka Pardubicka is renowned for being one of Europe’s most demanding steeplechases, covering a distance of 6,900 meters and featuring 31 obstacles. It has a rich history, first being held in 1874, and is open to horses aged six and older. Stumptown, owned by the Furze Bush Syndicate, previously demonstrated his capabilities by winning the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham.

In his victory, Stumptown initially stayed at the back of the pack, which was not part of the planned strategy. Donoghue shared his feelings after the race, stating, “I am thrilled. It was a tough race, but the horse managed it. He was great.” This win marks a significant achievement not only for the horse and rider but also for Irish racing as a whole.

Stumptown’s journey to this victory had its challenges. In his most recent outing prior to the Velka Pardubicka, he was pulled up during the Aintree Grand National, raising questions about his form. Nevertheless, his performance in the Velka Pardubicka showcased his resilience and ability to overcome adversity.

The race’s competitive nature was evident, with Čáryjape finishing in third place, ridden by Adam Čmiel, and Cuwall, with Jakub Kocman aboard, taking fourth.
