Kilmallock Hurlers Honor Late Community Figure After Match Victory

Kilmallock’s senior hurling team demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship on March 25, 2023, not only by defeating Monaleen in a thrilling extra-time match during the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final but also by honoring the memory of a beloved community member immediately afterward. Following the final whistle, the players rushed to attend the funeral of Angela Hanley, a respected figure in Kilmallock who recently passed away at the age of 59 after a prolonged illness.
The team formed a guard of honor as Angela’s remains were taken from Daffy’s funeral home to her final resting place, a poignant tribute underscoring the tight-knit nature of the local community. Angela, originally from Gortboy, Kilmallock, was cherished not just for her contributions to the town but also for her deep family connections; three of her nephews—Gavin O’Mahony, Robbie Hanley, and Conor Hanley-Clarke—have represented both club and county in hurling.
Angela’s sister, Máiréad, highlighted the significance of the players’ presence at the funeral, noting their close bond with Angela. “Gavin, Robbie, and Conor came into the funeral home after playing, and when we went outside, all the boys were there,” she said. “They had just literally come off the field and came straight to the funeral. Every single one of them turned up, which was lovely.”
Angela was known for her vibrant personality and her varied contributions to the community. She operated a coffee shop, ran a pub, and worked with Rehab Care, assisting adults with special needs. Máiréad described her sister as a warm and engaging person, stating, “She was a big talker, but she was a very good listener as well. People were drawn to her and would share their life stories.”
Former parish priest, Canon Willie Fitzmaurice, who had known Angela well, officiated the funeral Mass. During the service, Máiréad delivered a heartfelt eulogy, reflecting on the challenges of speaking about someone so integral to her life in the past tense. “We have great memories that we will cherish, and that’s what we rely on now to remember Angela,” she said.
She expressed gratitude to the medical staff at University Hospital Limerick, particularly Dr. Sonya Ryan, for their care during Angela’s illness. The community’s outpouring of support was evident, with many mourners attending the funeral to pay their respects. Máiréad noted, “It’s been such a support during such a sad time. As a family, we really appreciate it.”
The tribute from the Kilmallock GAA team resonated deeply within the community. Minister of State Niall Collins remarked on the significance of the players’ gesture, stating, “It spoke volumes about the esteem that Angela and the wider Hanley and O’Mahony families are held in Kilmallock.” He extended his condolences to all who knew Angela, emphasizing the profound impact she had on those around her.
Angela Hanley’s legacy continues to live on in the hearts of her family and friends, reminding the community of the bonds that unite them, both in celebration and in mourning.
