Family Raises Over €80,000 to Repatriate Young Kerry Woman
A family from Listowel, Ireland, has successfully raised over €81,500 to repatriate the body of their daughter, Serena Downey, who tragically passed away in Australia. The 29-year-old died unexpectedly on October 20, 2023, while living in Perth. Friends initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist in covering the costs associated with bringing her home for burial.
The fundraising effort has garnered significant support, with a current total of €81,500 (approximately $144,824 AUD) raised against a target of €90,125 (around $160,000 AUD). The GoFundMe page expresses the profound sadness of those close to Serena, stating, “It is with our deepest and most heavy hearts that we have to announce the passing of our most loved friend, Serena Downey, in Perth, Australia.”
The campaign aims to alleviate some of the financial burden on her family and to manage the expenses related to bringing her personal belongings back to Ireland. Serena’s mother, Helen Downey, extended her heartfelt thanks to all who contributed. She emphasized the overwhelming support from the community during this difficult time. “Words cannot express the depth of our gratitude for the love, kindness, and generosity of Serena’s community of family and friends,” Helen stated.
Travel Plans and Funeral Arrangements
Helen, along with Serena’s godmother Sarah and her sisters Jane and Ally, plans to travel to Australia for a funeral service in Perth. Following the service, Serena’s remains will return to Ireland for burial. “Every donation, message, and gesture of care has shown we are not alone during this most difficult time in our lives,” Helen added, expressing gratitude for the kindness shown by the community.
Tributes poured in for Serena, who was remembered fondly as “an incredibly kind, hardworking, and beautiful girl who brought joy to so many people.” One mourner expressed their condolences, stating, “Deepest sympathies to all Serena’s family and friends. May she watch over you and guide you through this unimaginable grief. Rest in peace, beautiful angel; you will be so missed by everyone who knew and loved you.”
Another shared, “Our deepest condolences to Serena’s family on her passing. A beautiful girl gone too soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. May she rest in peace.” A third mourner noted, “My deepest condolences to Serena’s family and friends. The nicest girl you could ever meet over here in Perth. Thinking of you all at this very difficult time. Rest in peace, Serena.”
Life in Australia
Serena moved to Australia in 2020, where she worked as a plant operator. She shared her experiences on social media, particularly on TikTok, where she had amassed over 21,000 followers. Her videos showcased life working in the mines and resonated with many viewers, highlighting her vibrant personality and adventurous spirit.
The family’s efforts to bring Serena home reflect not only their love for her but also the strong bonds of community and friendship that she cultivated throughout her life. The support from friends, family, and even strangers stands as a testament to the impact Serena had on those around her.
