The passing of Mary ‘May’ McGee, a pivotal figure in the fight for contraceptive rights in Ireland, has elicited widespread tributes from across the nation. McGee, who played a crucial role in a landmark Supreme Court ruling that led to the legalisation of contraception, died peacefully at Beaumont Hospital at the age of 81.

In the early 1970s, McGee and her husband, Séamus, sought legal recourse regarding their inability to access contraception. At just 27 years old and a mother of four, including twins, McGee faced serious health risks associated with further pregnancies. After suffering severe complications during her previous pregnancies, her doctor advised that contraception was essential to safeguard her health. However, due to restrictive Irish laws, McGee and her husband attempted to import a spermicidal jelly from the United Kingdom, only for customs to seize their package, threatening them with prosecution.

Determined to challenge the existing legal framework, the McGees pursued their case in the High Court, arguing that the 1935 law prohibiting the importation and sale of contraceptives was unconstitutional. While the initial ruling was against them, their perseverance paid off in 1973 when they won their appeal at the Supreme Court. This pivotal decision paved the way for the eventual legalisation of contraception in Ireland in 1980.

The impact of their case was profound, reshaping the Irish political landscape and ushering in improved reproductive choices for women across the country. Just last month, a mosaic dedicated to May was unveiled in Floraville Park by Skerries Tidy Towns, symbolizing her lasting legacy in the community.

As news of her death spread, heartfelt tributes poured in, celebrating her as a “formidable woman who changed Irish history.” One mourner expressed condolences, highlighting McGee’s warmth and kindness: “Always enjoyed May’s company when we were lucky to be in her presence. May had a heart of gold and always a wonderful smile.” Another tribute described her as “a kind and gentle soul, truly a selfless person.”

In accordance with her family’s wishes, McGee will lie in repose at Lannon’s Funeral Home from 18:00 to 20:00 on Friday. Her funeral service will take place at Dardistown Crematorium at 10:00 on Saturday, where attendees have been requested to wear bright colors to honor her vibrant spirit.

Mary ‘May’ McGee’s contributions to Irish society and her unwavering commitment to women’s rights will not be forgotten, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire future generations.
