Arson Confirmed in Fire at Louth International Protection Centre

A fire at the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) centre in Drogheda, Co Louth, has been confirmed as an act of arson. The incident occurred on the evening of October 31, 2025, resulting in the evacuation of several residents, including four children, one of whom was a baby. Emergency services responded swiftly to the blaze, which was reported around 20:00 local time.

The fire, initially thought to have been ignited by fireworks, was later determined by An Garda Síochána to have been deliberately set. A spokesperson for the Garda stated, “This was an extremely dangerous act endangering the lives of the residents, including children, who were in their home at the time.” Thankfully, all occupants were safely evacuated, although some were subsequently taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for medical assessment.

Government Officials Condemn the Attack

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin condemned the incident, describing it as “deeply disturbing.” Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan also expressed his outrage, labeling it a “criminal attack on a building accommodating people applying for international protection.” He emphasized the terrifying nature of the ordeal faced by the residents, many of whom were women and children.

O’Callaghan confirmed that alternative accommodation is being arranged for those affected, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. “There will be serious consequences for those responsible,” he stated. A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the inquiry from the incident room at Drogheda Garda Station.

Nick Henderson, Chief Executive of the Irish Refugee Council, described the arson as an “appalling incident.” He pointed out that families and children, who have fled war and persecution, were targeted while attempting to rebuild their lives. Henderson commended the Fire Service for their prompt response, which prevented a potentially more tragic outcome.

Local politician Matt Carthy from Sinn Féin emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “There can be no excuse for such action, and those involved must be held to account.” He praised the efforts of the Fire Service in rescuing those trapped in the building and called for the Gardaí to be allowed to perform their duties without interference.
