Galway Science and Technology Festival 2025 Draws 15,000 Attendees
Thousands of science and technology enthusiasts gathered at the University of Galway on November 5, 2025, for the opening day of the 28th annual Galway Science and Technology Festival. With an impressive turnout of approximately 15,000 attendees from the surrounding counties of Galway, Roscommon, Mayo, and Clare, the event showcased a full day of interactive learning and exploration in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Engaging Activities and Exhibits
The festival featured an array of activities, including 25 live shows and workshops, alongside more than 100 interactive stands presented by local, national, and multinational organizations. Notable exhibits included the newly-designed Medtronic Experience and the Medtronic Mystery Experience, as well as the University of Galway’s ‘Explore the Wonders of Science’ exhibition.
A highlight of the event was the recognition of Dr. Michel Dugon, a renowned zoologist and founder of the Venom Lab at the University of Galway. He was awarded the Galway Science Person of the Year for his dedication to inspiring children and students through engaging workshops focused on bugs, spiders, and snakes, as well as his ongoing scientific research.
Statements from Key Figures
During the festival, Ronan Rogers, Senior R&D Director with Medtronic, emphasized the alignment of his company’s values with the spirit of the festival. “At Medtronic, our story is one of continuous innovation,” he stated, highlighting their advancements from the world’s first leadless pacemaker to current breakthroughs in robotics and artificial intelligence. “The Galway Science and Technology Festival reminds us that every breakthrough starts with curiosity, and the next one could come from right here in Galway.”
Professor Becky Whay, Deputy President and Registrar of the University of Galway, expressed pride in the university’s role as the lead academic partner for the festival. “This collaboration reflects our commitment to inspiring curiosity and innovation in STEM,” she said. She also congratulated Dr. Dugon on his award, calling it a fitting recognition of his passion for engaging and inspiring others through science.
The Galway Science and Technology Festival continues to play a crucial role in promoting STEM education, encouraging young people to consider future careers in these fields. It also provides a unique platform for families to engage directly with scientists, engineers, and innovators, fostering a community of curiosity and exploration.
As the festival unfolds, its vibrant atmosphere not only entertains but also educates, reminding attendees of the endless possibilities that science and technology hold for the future.
