Donegal Woman Shares Journey After Breast Cancer Diagnosis

A Donegal woman is urging others to trust their instincts regarding health after her unexpected breast cancer diagnosis. Lynette Barnett, a mother of four from Raphoe, received the life-altering news in spring 2024 but has since completed her treatment at Letterkenny University Hospital.

In February 2024, after noticing a lump, Lynette promptly consulted her general practitioner. Within ten days, she underwent a mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsies at the hospital’s Breast Care Unit. Just one week later, she received the diagnosis that no one wants to hear: breast cancer. “I thought my world was going to end,” Lynette reflected. “But I put all my trust in my consultant, Mr. Michael Sugrue, to look after me, and he certainly did.”

Over the next several months, Lynette faced a grueling treatment regimen that included 16 rounds of chemotherapy, 15 rounds of radiation, and a mastectomy. By November 2024, she had successfully completed her treatment. Grateful for the care she received close to home, she expressed her appreciation for the Breast Centre North West. “Help is just a phone call away,” she noted, highlighting the support she received from her breast care nurses, Geraldine and Nicola.

Reflecting on her experience, Lynette emphasized the importance of self-awareness regarding health. Her diagnosis has profoundly changed how she views her body. “It put awareness big time into my family and friends,” she shared. “Nobody checks themselves as much now as I do. I am always checking my other breast.”

Lynette has also recognized a troubling trend: breast cancer is becoming increasingly common among women of all ages. “Since my diagnosis, I’ve talked to a shocking number of people who had it, and I didn’t even know,” she said. She advocates for lowering the age for routine mammograms, suggesting that screenings should begin at age 30 rather than 50 due to the rising number of younger women diagnosed with the disease.

In sharing her journey, Lynette aims to highlight the critical need for vigilance in breast health. “We all need to be very vigilant,” she stated, underscoring the importance of being aware of one’s body and acting quickly when something feels off.

On December 5, 2024, Lynette will be among many patients celebrated at the North West Breast Cancer Charity Ball at the Silver Tassie Hotel in Letterkenny. The event will raise funds for advancements at the Letterkenny centre while celebrating survivors and honoring those who have lost their battle with breast cancer.

The charity ball will feature special guest Shay Given, a legendary goalkeeper and pundit, with Noel Cunningham serving as the MC. Tickets for the evening are priced at €60.00 per person, including a drinks reception, a three-course meal, and entertainment from the Beefsteak Dancers.
